COURSE DESCRIPTION

The 5K course will be very fast while also taking in a nice tour of downtown.  This will be a tale of 2 halves as the first 1.5 miles are mostly flat to make it easy for people to settle into a good rhythm.  Then, everyone will have to pace themselves up a gradual uphill followed by a fast finish with a long gradual downhill. Compared to many of our area courses, this will be one of the fastest and definitely among the most scenic.

It starts just north of Crown Center on Grand and heads north for ½ mile to 18th St into the Crossroads district.  Turn right on 18th St. where you’ll enjoy a flat out and back section to the turnaround point under the 71 Highway bridge.  Turn right on Oak where you’ll need to negotiate your way up a long gradual hill to 11th St. while passing by the Kansas City Star building and Sprint Center.  From there, the fun begins as you’ll turn left on 11th and left on Grand where you’ll have a straight shot via a long gradual downhill back to where you started.  Along the way, you’ll pass through the KC Power & Light district.  Once you make it to 20th St, you’ll have a 3/10 mile straightway that begins with a short climb over the bridge before a flat finish back to Crown Center.  With just a few turns and long stretches of straight roads, it’ll be easy to settle into a good rhythm.

The Kansas City Marathon crowd was amazing! During the 5k, I felt the Kansas City love and the atmosphere really helped me in my last mile. I will definitely be back next year.
